IELTS Exam Pattern for Writing

The Writing section evaluates a candidate's ability to express their thoughts in written English. It consists of two tasks: Task 1 and Task 2. The total duration of the Writing section is 60 minutes.

Format:

  • Task 1: In the Academic module, candidates are presented with a graph, table, chart, or diagram and are required to summarize or describe the information in their own words. In the General Training module, candidates may be asked to write a letter responding to a given situation.
  • Task 2: In both modules, candidates are given a topic and are required to write an essay expressing their opinion, discussing both sides of an argument, or providing a solution to a problem.

Tips for Success:

  • Manage your time effectively to allocate enough time for both tasks.
  • Practice paraphrasing and using a variety of vocabulary and sentence structures.
  • Plan your essays before writing, ensuring a clear introduction, body paragraphs with supporting ideas, and a concise conclusion.
  • Pay attention to grammar, punctuation, and coherence in your writing.
