Silent reading is the practice of reading without speaking the words out loud or even mouthing them. Instead, your eyes and mind process the words directly. This method cuts down extra time spent on pronunciation and allows faster comprehension.
Begin by reading short newspaper articles, blogs, or essays silently. Focus on speed while maintaining comprehension.
Subvocalization is when you “say” the words in your head as you read. While natural, it slows down reading. Train yourself to move your eyes across lines without mentally pronouncing each word.
Set a timer for 5–10 minutes and read as much as you can silently. Afterward, summarize the content to check understanding. This develops both speed and retention.
